Welcome to Northern Ireland Screen's Digital Film Archive website. Originally launched in November 2000 as part of the British Film Institute (BFI) Millennium Project, Northern Ireland Screen's Digital Film Archive (DFA) is a free public access resource for teachers, students, historians and anyone who has an interest in moving images.
The DFA contains over 90 hours of moving images about life in pre- Partition Ireland and Northern Ireland from 1897 to 2014. There are items covering drama, animation, documentaries, news, newsreels, amateur and actuality film. Unlike other regional film archives across the United Kingdom, the Digital Film Archive is entirely digital and does not maintain a physical archive of film. Visitors to this website will be able to search and view many of the films in the collection. Due to copyright restrictions, some of the footage held on the DFA is only available to view at the 23 DFA sites, which include libraries, museums, art centres and universities. A full list of the DFA sites, with links to their websites, can be found on our Locations page.
Create Your Own Playlist
It is now possible for users to create their own personal playlist of films from the Digital Film Archive. Just register to become a member and save your favourite titles to access them each time you log in. You can still create a playlist without becoming a member, but this will only be accessible from the device you used to create your list and the films will only be temporarily saved. Please note that this is not the same as downloading the films to your computer, which is a breach of copyright. Please read our Terms and Conditions for more information on copyright. The content of this website is for your personal use only. We do not permit you to use film footage, images or any other material on this website in presentations and exhibitions for the general public, community groups, (including church, community, or other not-for-profit groups), schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions, conferences, exhibitions or any other type of event unless expressly authorised by Northern Ireland Screen in writing. All authorised events must be completely free of charge to the public. For more information on the uses of this website, please read our Terms and Conditions.
Northern Ireland Screen offers interested groups and schools access to free themed presentations using footage from the Digital Film Archive. If your group or school are interested in arranging a Digital Film Archive presentation, please see our FAQ section for details.
If you have footage that you feel would be of interest to us, please go to the FAQ section for details on what we look for in a film and how to go about submitting material for consideration.
