Description

A news item about an attempt, in the 1970s, to chemically process flax and make it more economically viable. Unfortunately the experiment was unsuccessful.

Report by Malcolm McCalister about the decline in the linen industry in Northern Ireland. The Agricultural Trust, a government body tried to develop a new method of growing and treating flax. Unfortunately the chemical treatment was unsuccessful and the project is being wound up. Flax fibres will continue to be imported from Belgium, France and Russia.
