Description

Behind the scenes film of work inside the Gallaher’s tobacco factory in York Street, Belfast. Gallaher’s had been founded in 1857 and when they opened their York Street factory in 1896 it was the largest cigarette factory in the world and it was a major employer in Belfast for nearly a hundred years with a royal warrant. The film shows the automated cutting of the tobacco and packaging as well as the legion of female workers separating tobacco leaves from stems. The end of the film contains footage for an advert shot by the banks the River Lagan.
