Anaka
Some films by the Anaka group
Based in North Belfast, Anaka is a women’s collective dedicated to empowering and supporting migrant women as they build their lives in Belfast. The group focuses on building community, connection and solidarity. Anaka provides a space where women from diverse backgrounds can come together to share experiences, develop skills, and advocate for their rights. Through a range of community-building activities and educational programmes, the collective fosters an inclusive and supportive environment, ensuring that no woman feels alone in her journey.
Anaka is deeply involved in a variety of initiatives and projects designed to uplift and empower migrant women. These include: English classes, helping women gain confidence in their language skills and navigate daily life more easily; the ‘Grow’ Community Garden, a shared space where women can connect with nature, grow their own food, and build friendships in a welcoming and therapeutic setting; Art and mental health exhibitions, providing a platform for women to express their stories, culture, and personal experiences through creativity; Education projects such as ‘16+’, offering vital support to exam-age learners who arrive in Belfast and often find themselves falling through the cracks of the education system. This initiative helps young people access the resources, guidance, and opportunities they need to pursue their ambitions and thrive.
By amplifying voices, creating opportunities, and fostering a strong sense of belonging, Anaka continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of migrant women across Belfast. This collection gives just an impression of the group's vital work.
