BeU LGBTQIA+

A collection of films from the BeU LGBTQIA+ group

This passionate and dedicated collective of LGBTQIA+ activists, historians, and community workers is committed to archiving, preserving and sharing queer history in Northern Ireland. Made up of members from groups such as BeU (organised through the Rainbow Project Belfast and the Trans Resource Centre), as well as participants from Here NI Belfast and the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project, this group plays a vital role in ensuring that LGBTQIA+ stories, struggles and triumphs are documented and celebrated.

The driving force of their work is a strong sense of community and connection. Many members meet weekly as part of BeU, a supportive social group for Trans, Non-binary and Intersex individuals, providing a safe space for people to come together, share experiences, and find solidarity.

Beyond social support, the group has been instrumental in documenting and showcasing LGBTQIA+ history. Volunteers from the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project in Belfast have worked on creative and educational initiatives such as ‘Places of Pride’ and ‘Objects of Pride’, producing insightful videos that highlight key locations and artefacts significant to Northern Ireland’s queer history. Their work has also led to the creation of an online LGBTQIA+ History Archive, ensuring that these important narratives are not only remembered but also made accessible for future generations.

Through activism, storytelling, and historical preservation, this group is helping to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices, making sure that the past is not forgotten and that the community’s legacy continues to inspire, inform, and empower. You can see some BeU LGBTQIA+'s remarkable work in this collection archived under the NI Now Project.
