Materialities of History

Materialities of History

A collection by Ulrika Ferm

The collection on view here is created as part of the Materialities of History project, which was delivered in collaboration between artist Ulrika Ferm and curator Mirjami Schuppert. The artist, who is originally from a small coastal town in Finland, was invited to respond to the Coast and Sea themed films at the Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film archive. After intensive research into the archive, Ferm created a new body of artwork that is displayed in an exhibition at PS2 gallery in Belfast. In her research, the artist mainly focused on the Northern Ireland Tourist Board collection, which created films that aimed to sell Northern Ireland as a holiday destination. The newly created artwork consisting of film excerpts is accompanied by this collection of films that bring another perspective to the Northern Ireland Tourist Board material of similar places around our coast line.

Materialities of History continues at PS2, Belfast until 26 August 2017.

The exhibition is part of BFI Britain on Film Coast and Sea, it is curated by Mirjami Schuppert, curator in residence at PS².
