Omagh Collective

Some films created by the Omagh Collective

Based in the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh, this community group is made up of members from local historical societies, with support from colleagues in Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. Many of the group’s members are older individuals, including those who identify as blind, deaf, or hard of hearing, yet they are all united by a shared love for history, culture, and storytelling. Together, they shine a light on the rich but often overlooked heritage of County Tyrone, ensuring its stories are preserved and celebrated for future generations.

Driven by a deep commitment to uncovering and sharing local history, the group has worked on a variety of fascinating projects. They have explored the legacy of Omagh’s showbands, curating an exhibition and showcase dedicated to the town’s once-thriving music venues and dance halls, bringing back memories of a golden era in live entertainment. They have also delved into the region’s transport history, researching and producing a video on the railways and travel networks that once connected communities across the North.

Beyond these projects, the group has also collaborated with those involved in HerStory and the history of women in politics in the North, ensuring that the contributions of women’s voices are recognised and given their rightful place in history.

With an unwavering dedication to bringing the past to life, this group continues to champion the stories, music and people of County Tyrone, ensuring that its cultural heritage is not only remembered but celebrated.
