About SOUP (Stories Of Unruly People):
Starting in 2021, SOUP (originally called What's the Story?) was intended as a short-term project to connect young adults with their identity and community, aimed at those ages 12+. Building from their early outreach work in schools, exploring the common threads between diverse groups of teenagers, the project developed into what it is today in 2025.
Over time, the aims of the group have stayed the same, but the project has developed into an arts-for-social-action group, tackling long-term, impactful work through multi-art forms.
SOUP is a safe, creative space that empowers young people to explore art as a vehicle for positive social change. It provides young people with the opportunity to have their voices heard, exercise autonomy, grow in confidence and lead with their heart in a unique, young person driven environment. We collaborate with a range of highly skilled community artists who facilitate the young people to grow in artistic skill throughout our projects. SOUP is a weekly, project based multi-arts group based in Beat Carnival Centre for young people from Year 10+ on Wednesday nights from 6-8pm.
Through their work over the years, SOUP has built a strong sense of community, as most of the original group have grown with the project, transitioning from being participants to paid peer leaders. Through different transitions in life, group members still come back to be part of the community.
SOUP is funded by the National Lottery Community Empowering Young People’s Project. This work has funded the Beat Carnival youth programme more widely, enabling young people to understand who they are as people and how they relate to the world around them.
