SPUDS

Some films about the SPUDS group

Based in Drumcree Community Centre, Portadown, SPUDS is a warm and welcoming wellness group dedicated to supporting mental wellbeing and building confidence and resilience – particularly among working-class women in the community. Run by a passionate group of women, many of the activities are led by sisters Susie and Karen Ingram, both of whom are yoga instructors with a love for creativity and arts-based projects.

The group’s name, SPUDS, stands for ‘Simple Practical Ultimate De-Stressing’, reflecting their commitment to making wellbeing accessible, down-to-earth, and effective. Whether through movement, mindfulness, or creative expression, SPUDS provides a safe and supportive space where women can take time for themselves, connect with others, and develop tools for managing stress and improving mental health.
This collection contains some of the inspiring projects SPUDS has realised. One of their standout achievements has been writing, recording, and releasing a single, music video, and documentary titled ‘Monkey Mind’, which explores the struggle with anxiety and promotes positive mental health. Through music and storytelling, the project resonated deeply with participants and the wider community, encouraging open conversations about mental wellbeing.

The group also took part in a ‘time capsule’ project with the Nerve Centre, where they buried a capsule filled with hopes, messages, and reflections in the front garden of the Drumcree Community Centre – a symbolic act of looking to the future with optimism and resilience. SPUDS reflect on this project in a series of interviews contained in this collection.

With a focus on wellbeing, creativity, and community, SPUDS aims to uplift and inspire, proving that small, supportive spaces can make a big difference in people’s lives.
