Unlocking Film Heritage

Beautifully preserved films, capturing over 100 years of local life on film

The BFI's Unlocking Film Heritage is one of the biggest film archive projects ever undertaken. Working in tandem with a selection of the most significant film archive institutions throughout the UK - 10,000 titles have been digitised and made available online by the project's completion in 2017.

Northern Ireland Screen - through its Digital Film Archive - focused on curating and making accessible film materials that tell our stories and the story of film in Northern Ireland. These materials encompass the work of broadcasters, government departments, independent filmmakers and amateur cine enthusiasts.

By digitising our heritage we will ensure that the people of the UK, filmmakers, educationalists, researchers and other users can access and enjoy the full range of Northern Irish filmmaking, regardless of where they live or where that film heritage is held. This unprecedented access continues to transform our understanding of the shape, history and diversity of film and TV in Northern Ireland and throughout the UK.
