Description

The 1961 General Election of the Republic of Ireland was held on 4 October after the President Eamon de Valera received a request for dissolution of the Irish parliament, the Dail, from the Taoiseach Sean Lamass. The governing Fianna Fail party had a comfortable majority over the opposition of Fine Gale and Labour and it was an election which struggled to enthuse the electors in the general public. This UTV report by Ernest Strathdee was one of a number they made from Dublin in the days leading up to the election and includes a interviews with representatives of the two main parties, Fianna Fail and Fine Gale, including a Taoiseach of the future, Charles Haughey.
