Description

“I think the Belfast Jewish community has made a contribution to Northern Ireland much in excess to its numbers.”

This programme charts the history of the Jewish community in Northern Ireland, from the refugees of the 1880s - who arrived in Belfast having fled persecution in Eastern Europe - up to the present day.

The programme discusses some of the notable individuals who made significant contributions to the life of Northern Ireland, including the industrialist - and twice Lord Mayor of Belfast - Sir Otto Jaffe (1846-1929) and Rabbi Dr Isaac Herzog (1888-1959) who was the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland and later became Chief Rabbi of Israel. His Belfast-born son, Chaim, would become President of Israel.
