Description

What hope is there for a nation that lives on potatoes? This documentary examines the Great Famine (1845 to 1849), an event which was to have a devastating impact on the people of Ireland.

This programme explores the many elements that contributed to the Irish famine, a myriad of underlying processes and causes that included not just crop failure and potato blight, but economic, political and social factors.

Notes

Some 1 million people were to die as a direct result of the famine, with the mortality rate matched by the numbers who emigrated from the island as part of a mass exodus.
