Description

This 1956 film captures a family holiday to White Rocks on the North Coast of Antrim. The beautiful photography captures the holiday atmosphere, with children playing in the water and enjoying donkey rides. Most of the film is shot by Stanley Cave, but his keen-eyed cameraman appears on film, cooling his feet and capturing some photographs. Sarah Cave, his wife, takes the reins for a this short insert. There is also footage of a family trip to Llandudno in North Wales. Llandudno is known for its distinctive landmark, the Llandudno Pier Pavilion Theatre. This theatre hosted many household names of the mid-twentieth century, including George Formby, Petula Clark, and Cliff Richard. It also hosted political rallies by figures like David Lloyd George, Clement Attlee, and Winston Churchill. By the 1980s, the theatre’s glory days were behind it, relegated to hosting waxwork exhibitions and recreations of Victorian London’s streets, including Fleet Street’s most famous fictional resident’s shop, Sweeney Todd. Tragically, the building was destroyed in a 1994 arson attack.
