The UTA ran rail and bus transport in Northern Ireland from 1948 until 1966.
In 1962, on the recommendation of Dr Beeching, the head of British Railways, the Benson
report suggested the closure of many railway lines, especially in the west of Northern Ireland. This would leave most rural areas without a railway network. Unhappiness about these clo
sures, especially in Derry, would become part of the general protest that
led
to the emergence of the Civil Rights movement.
