Description

This Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) protest march was over increases in fares, and possibly also against the implementation of the Benson Report, which would decimate the railway system across Northern Ireland. The march went from Duncrue Street to the steps of Stormont.

Notes

The UTA ran rail and bus transport in Northern Ireland from 1948 until 1966.

In 1962, on the recommendation of Dr Beeching, the head of British Railways, the Benson

report suggested the closure of many railway lines, especially in the west of Northern Ireland. This would leave most rural areas without a railway network. Unhappiness about these clo

sures, especially in Derry, would become part of the general protest that

led

to the emergence of the Civil Rights movement.
