Description

This short film documents a visit to Clifton House by the Anaka Women’s Collective as they explore the life and legacy of Mary Ann McCracken, one of Belfast's most influential activists. Born in 1770, McCracken was a tireless campaigner for social justice, championing women’s rights, education for the poor, and the preservation of the Irish language, as well as advocating for the abolition of slavery. Her extensive correspondence provides an invaluable record of life in 18th- and 19th-century Belfast.

A pioneering entrepreneur, McCracken co-ran a muslin patterning business with her sister, Margaret, notable for refusing to exploit workers—primarily young women—by cutting wages to reduce costs. Her commitment to fairness and justice made her a trailblazer in both activism and business.

In 2024, Belfast City Council celebrated McCracken’s extraordinary contributions with the unveiling of a bronze statue in the grounds of Belfast City Hall. This film follows the women of Anaka as they pay tribute to McCracken's enduring legacy, visiting her graveside and reflecting on how her story continues to inspire future generations.

The Anaka Women’s Collective, based in North Belfast, empowers migrant women through community-building initiatives and educational programmes. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, Anaka helps women from diverse backgrounds share experiences, build skills, and advocate for their rights.
