Gerry Kelly presents this series which features an interview with various individuals who have immigrated to Northern Ireland.
This programme is focused on Eppy Shierbeek, who grew up in Holland during the War and moved to NI "exactly 25 years ago". Kelly speaks to Eppy about her life in Holland during the Nazi occupation, where she lived "quite near the German border". Mentioning a happy youth with lots of freedom, this changed abruptly when three German captains moved into their home - which consequently meant that they had to move out.
Eppy discusses how they were "restricted in every way" and her horror at "seeing Jewish people exported", even more shockingly to her, was the disappointment in close friends turning into Nazis. Despite this though, she doesn't think it has effected her too much in her later life, but prefers not to think of the past.
After the war she met her husband, though she had to wait until she was 29 to marry as there were no available houses, or anything really! Eppy states that she is still thankful to "the Americans" as they came and brought supplies.
Her journey to NI came in 1963 whenever her husband moved for business and cites her happy marriage on them being "a good team", this was needed when the company her husband worked for closed down. However, both the Shierbeeks's and their children are still happily settled in NI and don't have any plans to leave.
