World featherweight champion Barry McGuigan is the subject
of this report by Adrian Logan for Good Evening Ulster previewing his
forthcoming defence against Fernando Sosa of Argentina. There is much
discussion about leaving a month early for a training camp to acclimatise
himself for the fight as this title defence would fatefully take place in the
searing summer heat of an outdoor ring in Las Vegas - not a natural or
comfortable zone for the Irishman.
McGuigan
had been meant to fight Sosa in February, only for him to be replaced due to a
broken finger. Having prepared to fight this particular opponent in Las Vegas,
McGuigan would be wrong-footed when Sosa again pulled out with two detached
retinas. The replacement opponent of Steve Cruz would break Irish hearts in the
heat of the desert.
