Description

Remarkable footage of the Belfast entertainment scene in the early 1960s featuring many landmark theatres and cinemas which would not see out the decade under the changing habits introduced by television. The Royal Cinema, the Hippodrome and Empire theatres are all seen. Meanwhile, in North Street, the old Alhambra (once a theatre, then a cinema) was under scaffolding for conversion to a restaurant. Also seen in North Street is the old Woolworths store. Today, the only one of these theatres left standing is the Grand Opera House.
