Description

Opening in 1841 on Belfast's Lisburn Road, the Belfast Union Workhouse was operated by the Belfast Poor Law Union to provide relief for the destitute in society. The census of 1901 notes there being over 3,300 inmates. It closed in 1948 upon formation of the National Health Service and was largely demolished in 1964, as seen in this footage. Parts of it do still remain today though as part of the grounds of Belfast City Hospital.
