Description

This edition of Counterpoint from 1981 focusses on the work of the Ulster Polytechnic at its two campuses in Jordanstown and York Street, Belfast. A few years later in 1984 the polytechnic merged with two other centres of learning in Derry/Londonderry and Coleraine to form the University of Ulster and this documentary gives an interesting snapshot of the "poly" before it took on its modern form. The Rector of the institution, Derek Birley, who would later become the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, speaks about the range of learning available. The cameras also look into various schools within the campuses including fashion, computer science and catering, as well as various avenues of health research. The librarian of the extensive library is also interviewed as well as a representative of the Students' Union.
