Description

Film of the annual pilgrimage to the top of the Croagh Patrick mountain near Westport in Co Mayo. Busloads of pilgrims can be seen arriving and perusing stalls of religious merchandise which have been set up. Many of the pilgrims then proceed to walk up the mountain barefoot. A stretcher party is seen carrying one unfortunate pilgrim back down the incline while others kneel in prayer on the summit and many wash their feet in a stream at the conclusion of the event.

The pilgrimage to the summit of Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo takes place each year on Reek Sunday, the final Sunday in July. A church has been located on the summit since the fifth century with the current one dating from the early twentieth century. The mountain itself is associated with Saint Patrick due to tradition recording that he fasted for forty days on the summit. Many pilgrims make the journey barefoot as a mark of penance.
