Description

This is a piece broadcast on UTV's Good Evening Ulster nightly news programme and is a selection of highlights of Derry City, set to a song which had been released about them.

Derry City had been formed in 1928, but ended up having to withdraw from senior football in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, when policing their games became problematic due to ongoing sectarian violence between rival supporters. In 1985 they applied to join a reformatted league in the Republic of Ireland, joining the second tier of football (the First Division, beneath the Premier Division) and won a trophy in the shape of the First Division Shield that same season.

The following year they won promotion to the Premier Division and won a treble of competitions soon after in the 1988/89 season. Drawing huge crowds at the time, the team brought success back to the city of Derry, despite the dubious artistic merits of the song released in their honour.
