This is
Newtownards, Northern Ireland. Although Newtownards has a past which stretches back into centuries of
turbulent Irish history today it is an Ulster town virtually without
violence.

Only ten
miles from Belfast city centre many of the population commute to work in that
troubled city. But Newtownards has a
thriving industry of its own.

Berkshire,
a subsidiary of a big American corporation, came here 25 years ago because of
the local tradition of hosiery making. Since then they have multiplied production several times over. Today ten percent of the total population
of Newtownards work here.

Even here
the safety restrictions common to all Ulster towns operate but to housewives
this is a small price to pay for the luxury of shopping in peace and comfort.

But good
relations in the town are above all the result of a sustained effort to weld
the communities together. The senior
clergy are four of the key men of the town. From their meetings as Chaplains to the local hospital grew the Social
Amenities Committee – a co-ordinating body drawing together all the
activities for peace and social improvement in Newtownards.

expected.
