Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Northern Ireland for a two day visit in July 1966, primarily to officially open the new bridge named in her honour across the River Lagan in Belfast. However, after she departed for England at the end of the second day, Prince Philip stayed on for one further day of engagements. This involved giving out awards to those involved in his Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme and the young people got to meet the Duke in the grounds of Hillsborough Castle, the official royal residence in Northern Ireland.
The footage also shows conversations between Prince Philip and Rex McCandless who had been demonstrating his gyrocopter at the event. The copter crashed, as can be seen from the damage to it, but fortunately McCandless lived to tell the tale and to discuss it with the Duke.
