The Great Golf Journeys team heads to the north west and the historic City of Derry. Don O’Doherty, City of Derry Golf Club, describes the origins and further developments of the course. The formation of the club was allegedly first discussed over a cup of tea In Foster's fashionable tea shop in the centre of the city in 1911. It was agreed 66 acres would be leased.
Over the years the course has been extended on a number of occasions to the present 27 hole complex. Despite the lack of sunshine and not-so-unusual dampness in the air, Ronan and Joey enjoy some challenging holes that this course has to offer. The team also meets Lynn McCool, a young golfer with great potential.
Today the 18 hole course spans almost 6,000 metres, variety being its main feature, with lush green fairways meandering through mature woods providing a protective habitat for many wild creatures. With impressive views of the wide sweep of the River Foyle and a backdrop of distant hills this great course seems like an ideal setting for a game.
