Description

A priest and other local figures from the Hooker Street area of Belfast arrive for a meeting with the RUC. Among their number are members of the Ardoyne Citizens’ Action Committee and (on the right) Stormont MP Vivian Simpson of the Northern Ireland Labour Party. A confrontation between local youths and the police several days earlier had caused fears in the press that a wave of sectarian violence could be about to be unleashed in the area. A series of talks were held to try and calm the situation.
