The month of July was a particularly violent month, especially in Belfast. Sixteen Catholics and seven Protestants were killed while two hundred Catholic homes were destroyed. The newsreels, always keen to avoid controversy where possible, did not reflect this conflict in their coverage. Instead of reporting the sectarian attacks raging throughout Northern Ireland, reports on the violence were sparse in July's newsreels. Pathé reports on ‘Irish Pony Show’ and ‘Irish Pageant’, ‘Phoenix Park Races’, ‘Irish Polo Season’ while Gaumont covers ‘Lord Londonderry’s Garden Party at Botanic Gardens’ with footage of James Craig, marquees, the gardens, smiling guests and children on donkeys and in fancy dress.
