Description

The previous year, at the Annual Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland, Ian Paisley had led a large protest march by the Free Presbyterian Church to complain about ‘Romanisation’ of the Presbyterians. The march had resulted in violent clashes along its route and was the subject of large scale political debate over protest marches, with Paisley himself being sent to prison for three months for unlawful assembly. There was little chance of such scenes being allowed by the government the following year for the Assembly in 1967. Paisley instead held a small scale picket of the premises at Assembly Buildings in Fisherwick Place.
