Jack McClelland was a well-known endurance swimmer and athlete in Northern Ireland during the 1950s and 1960s. He was famous through a number of difficult swimming achievements such as being the first man to swim from Rathlin Island to Ballycastle. In this footage the barrel-chested Jack wades ashore to speak to Jimmy Greene about having just become the first man to swim Galway Bay. Jack was not only a trailblazer swimmer at the time but also a pioneer in promoting the health benefits of veganism. As well as swimming he tried his hand at weight-lifting, wrestling and even turned down a professional football contract with Arsenal.
