This interview with Stephen McGonagle was part of a larger programme in which James Boyce looked to the future of Derry.
Stephen McGonagle (17 November 1914 – 4 March 2002) was a Northern Irish trade unionist.
View from walls of Derry down to an area of slum housing which Boyce refers to as 'architectural underprivilege'. Pan across to a multi-story block of flats currently under construction. 00:32 Boyce interviews Stephen McGonagle about urban renewal. McGonagle reminds Boyce that this is slum clearance and that there is very little rehousing happening. Mentions the opening of Maydown Traning centre and the expansion of industry. 02:08 McGonagle expressed disappointment at Derry losing the University of Ulster to Coleraine. But says that cultural life is still good in Derry.
