This interview with John Hume was part of a larger programme in which James Boyce looked to the future of Derry.
John Hume helped to found the moderate nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) in 1970, later taking over as its leader in 1979.
Boyce at 'Roaring Meg' a well known cannon which was used in Derry's defense during the Siege of Derry. Boyce compares the noise produced by the cannon with the voice of those living in Derry. 00:46 Boyce interviews John Hume about the future of Derry. He states that the image of Derry is a result of its particular history - a political situation where the minority rules. There are roles for both Protestants and Catholics in changing this political situation.
