Description

John Caldwell, from west Belfast, was interviewed by Ernest Strathdee ahead of flying off to Brazil for a fight with the acclaimed boxer Eder Jofre. Caldwell was speaking just after Christmas before flying to London, the first of four flights on his way to Sao Paolo. He had won the bronze medal in the bantamweight division at the 1956 Olympics before turning professional. He had become world champion in 1961 and successfully defended the title before making the long trip to fight against one of the greats of the era. Sadly, Caldwell would lose his crown against the legendary Jofre but he would be involved in another title fight before the end of the year which would go down in history – against fellow Belfast fighter Freddie Gilroy.
