Description

A memorial service at St Columb’s in the Waterside, Derry for President John F Kennedy. Naval personnel from the Naval Communications Station present.

Notes

John F Kennedy: President Kennedy (1917-1963) was assassinated in Dallas in November 1963. He was US President for three years and had close connections to Ireland. He visited Dublin in 1962 and his death was greeted with shock and sorrow all over Ireland.

The US Naval Communications Station was established in Londonderry in 1943 in support of the Allied troops. It remained in operation until 1977. It was based on the site where Foyle College now sits and a memorial to it and those who served can be seen there.
