This journey starts near the top of the Inishowen Peninsula, Knockamany Bends, overlooking Five Finger Strand and Trawbreaga Bay, a spot which offers some of the most dramatic views in the country. Only a few miles away there’s the Tidy Towns contest winner, Malin, and a few miles in the opposite direction there’s Malin Head, the most northerly point of mainland Ireland.
Apart from the amazing views, Joe Mahon encounters local residents with plenty of skills, crafts and wisdom to share. On this tour he’ll visit a local ostrich farm, a weather station monitoring the weather day in, day out as well as local fishermen of Malin Head Co-op. There is an abundance of stories linked to this part of the world and the story of the Queen of Fairies is just one of them. Joe tells the story of how the Queen drowned here, in Trawbreaga Bay, as she was swept away along with her gardens by the powerful tides. He visits a local printmaker inspired by the local storytelling and illustrates these fairytales and myths to give them a tangible form.
