Description

In this episode of Lesser Spotted Ulster, Joe Mahon heads to the peak of Slieve Gallion, a mountain in Co. Derry / Londonderry and explores the area surrounding it as well as its history, its people and the way of life. On the basalt mountain top of the mountain, there is a cairn -  the burial place of King Colla Uaís, according to local myths - and a magnificent view of fields neatly parcelled by high hedgerows and dry-stone walls. Tobermore, Desertmartin, Magherafelt and Moneymore are all laid out beneath Slieve Gallion. From here, you can see Lough Neagh in its entirety, the Belfast hills, the Glens of Antrim and the Mournes of County Down.

Apart from the amazing views, Joe Mahon encounters local residents with plenty of skills, crafts and wisdom to share. Not only do we learn how to churn butter the old fashioned way, we also finds out about local quilt making, play a guessing game at a local agricultural museum and even how to pick a good hillwalking walking stick.
