This footage of an athletics meet (possibly the Northern Ireland Track and Field Championships at Aircraft Park, Belfast) captures two of Northern Ireland’s golden greats of track and field. Dame Mary Peters famously won the gold medal for the Pentathlon at the 1972 Olympics with a world record score and also achieved gold medals at the 1970 and 1974 Commonwealth Games. Thelma Hopkins set a new world record for the High Jump in Belfast in 1954, the same year that she took the gold medal in both the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games. She would also gain a silver medal at the 1956 Olympics.
