Description

Bluebell Lane, situated in the Ring of Gullion, is a natural site developed to promote and preserve the area’s rich history, cultural significance, and native flora and fauna.

In this film, Padraig Carragher - Bluebell Lane’s founder, along with Sharon Carragher - takes us into Peter’s metal workshop. Peter explains and demonstrates the process of making a custom metal plaque that will be installed in front of various trees and plants to identify them and educate visitors. Each step of this fascinating process is shown. Peter first creates a mold. A raging fire is lit, and once it reaches the desired temperature, a metal-loaded crucible is lowered into it. When the crucible is removed, molten metal is poured into the mold. Peter allows the metal to cool before removing and quenching it. Each plaque is hand-painted and attached to a wooden pillar by Padraig. As Padraig prepares the pillar and plaque, he explains his ambition for Bluebell Lane and reveals his hope that the native Irish red squirrel might one day call this beautiful place home again.
