Description

From midnight on the 31st August 1994, the IRA announced a ceasefire. It became a key moment in Northern Ireland's Peace Process. In the following days, various residents groups, local farmers and Sinn Féin supporters set to remove bollards on border roads. This occurred in Fermanagh and Tyrone where farmers used earth moving equipment in tractors. Various roads were closed again by the army, but people returned again to reopen them.

This scene, near Derry, the people used ropes and elbow grease. The Coshquin Road, visible in this video, is a key road between Derry and Donegal. Martin McGuinness took part and can be seen in this video. The RUC arrived to monitor the situation. Sinn Féin party spokesman, Dominic Doherty, told the Belfast Telegraph that there was no justification for the bollards following the ceasefire and that this action was "only the beginning."
