Description

At Crumlin Road Gaol, the new uniforms for prisoners appear quite smart compared to what we would see today.

Notes

Crumlin Road Gaol was designed by Charles Lanyon, who was the architect of many of Belfast's grandest buildings, including Queen's University. It was built in the 1860s and remained open until 1996.The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has given it a grade A listed building status because of its architectural and historical significance. The Crumlin Road Courthouse, derelict since its closure, stands opposite the Gaol with a tunnel under the main road connecting the two buildings and used previously to transport the prisoners between both buildings.
