Description

Part of ITV's travelogue series, About Britain, this episode of No Poor Parish takes a closer loor at Draperstown, Cop Derry / Londonderry. Come see the green glens and murmuring streams of picturesque Draperstown and its surrounds.

People have lived in Ballinascreen, situated in a remote valley in the Sperrins, for at least 3,000 years. The origins of those early, pagan settlers and the contemporary traces of their existence are explored. Local folklore, folk traditions and the origin of the local place names are explained. The development of the area through the years and key events - such as the coming of Christianity and resistance to English rule - are detailed. The programme also explores the culture and working life of the area, through crafts - including textiles - and musical traditions such as the prevalence of Irish harpists.
