Description

Ivan Little reports for Good Evening Ulster from the Co Donegal village of Ballybofey and the unusual development taking place at a local hotel - a nuclear disco. Barry Jackson is interviewed about the Pyramid Disco being built underneath the hotel, explaining that they've so much steel and concrete that they felt the structure could easily double up as nuclear shelter. Jackson is selling 400 tickets for the shelter at £250 a time - a nice income boost in 1986 money.

Pressed on what people get for their money, he's a bit vague, with hotel facilities and a bar which will 'always' be fully stocked the main selling points in the event of nuclear war. No thought seems to have been given to how to stop those who haven't paid from getting in and the local villagers seem less than impressed. Nevertheless, it demonstrates how nuclear fears pervaded thinking in the 1980s, even driving such unusual business interests.
