Description

In this episode, Once Upon a Place takes a closer look at Upper Lough Erne. This is the smaller southern lake of Lough Erne as it is higher up the river. Not so much a lake as a watery maze of more than 150 islands and inlets, Upper Lough Erne lends itself to a variety of watersports regularly enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

Local residents and historians take us on a tour exploring the rich history of Belturbet, known in the past as a busy market town with cattle, horse-drawn carriages and famous for the craic. We will also visit Newtownbutler and Crom Estate where John Crichton, now the 7th Earl Erne, tells us more about the history of the estate. Joining local boating enthusiasts, we also visit Lanesborough Lodge, known locally as Quivvy Lodge, before continuing on a journey with the Erne Boat Rally.

This episode features interviews with local residents - Francie Fitzpatrick, Liam Darcy, James Brady, George and Christina Ryan, Eileen McEnri, Austin Fitzpatrick, Violet Johnston, P.J. Bane and Johnny Phadraic.
