Description

Seán Lemass returns the invitation to Terence O’Neill who has arrived in Dublin. In this clip, we also see future Taoiseach Jack Lynch. The two premiers come out to the crowds to shake hands in an important gesture of North/South relations. 

Notes

Seán Lemass was the Fianna Fáil Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland 1959-1966. He was a veteran of the 1916 Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War, and a founder member of Fianna FáilHe was a staunch Republican but did not agree with the 1950s IRA campaign and worked to ease tensions in Ireland.
