PM Terence O’Neill and Irish Taoiseach Seán Lemass walk around the grounds of Stormont Castle before going inside for talks. This meeting was kept a secret from even Lemass’s cabinet but indicated a thawing in North/South relations after the hand-line stance of Lord Brookeborough.

Seán Lemass was the Fianna Fáil Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland 1959-1966. He was a veteran of the 1916 Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War, and a founder member of Fianna Fáil. He was a staunch Republican but did not agree with the 1950s IRA campaign and worked to ease tensions in Ireland.
