All the fun of the fair! This footage comes from the annual Puck Fair held in Killorglin in Co Kerry which officially dates a fair back to 1613, but is suspected to be much older again. You’ll see strange footage of a goat being hoisted up onto a platform in an elaborate lift. This is part of the tradition, with the name of the fair meaning “Fair of the He-Goat”, and where a group of men catch a wild goat from the local mountains. The creature is then crowned as King to watch over the proceedings for three days before being released. Fortunately, today the ceremony only lasts for a few hours before the “King” is discharged of his official duties.
All the normal fair
activities are on show from the whirling rides to the stalls of merchandise,
from Irish dancing and a procession of floats to donkey racing through the
streets.
