The Revered Ian Paisley was a controversial figure who first came to public attention in the 1950s, forming his own Free Presbyterian Church. During his career, he led protests against a number of issues including civil rights, homosexuality, the Presbyterian Church, the Catholic Church and the Good Friday Agreement. He founded the Democratic Unionist Party in 1971 and would go on to become and MP and an MEP. He became First Minister of Northern Ireland in 2007 and died in 2014.
