Description

Rinty Monaghan was one of the most successful and famous boxers ever to hail from Northern Ireland. The man from north Belfast became British, European and undisputed World Champion at flyweight, picking up a prized Lonsdale belt along the way, before retiring while still champion of the world. He was also famous for taking a microphone in the middle of the ring and singing When Irish Eyes Are Smiling at the conclusion of his bouts, while a statue of him unveiled in Belfast city centre immortalises him with microphone in hand. This footage from near the end of his life has him singing his signature tune.
