William Jenkins, Lord Mayor of Belfast, mingles with crowds during the Sandy Row Shopping Week. He can also be seen in a vintage car being pulled by ropes by young men from the Charter Youth Club. Jenkins was the patron of the club set up for local boys and girls and the Shopping Week was an initiative to draw more attention to its work in the area. One of the bizarre elements to the week was a Spot the Stranger competition in which shoppers were invited to look out for objects in windows which shouldn’t be there.
